If you do struggle, or get frustrated when your business situations don’t resolve in your favor, how does that feel? Tough, right?
You may already know that I’ve spent a lot of years in broadcast advertising sales, over 25+ successful years as a matter of fact-presenting, pitching, speaking, communicating one on one conversations, group conversations, and big old boardroom conversations, led sales teams, exceeded corporate revenue goals.
One of the things that keeps coming to light for me, whether it’s myself in my own business experience or through others when they’re communicating with me…is the compelling need to be able to be clear, concise and on point. I’ve struggled with that for a lot of years too-felt as if I needed to fill every hole, cover every bullet point. Critical business decisions have been won, and also lost, simply by the WAY you communicate. Deep down, I’ll bet you already know that.
And you may also realize that the missing communication skill, that needing to just mindlessly talk…does so much damage. It is such a distraction. In business, and certainly in life… People can feel insecurity, doubt, a lack of authenticity. Sometimes, you’ll get a chance for a “do-over” and much more often, you won’t- so then what?
When these moments come (important conversations), and big moments are not big stages-what do you do about it? Look, an important conversation may matter because it matters to you. However, an important conversation really matters because it matters to them. Who’s “them?” Your client, your new business pitch, your boss, the boardroom, the interviewer…yeah, THEM! You want to make sure you’re being heard accurately. And in a way that not just gets you what you want, but is heard clearly so that there are no further distractions…and you are not dismissed.
That to me is what’s critical in this day and age of so much data, so much content, so much. You’re competing for space, revenue, keeping your job, getting promoted… So here is one tip to take back to work this afternoon…
Own the space! Simply put, take the steps to demonstrate you deserve a seat at the table. For your next appointment- review prior notes, make it matter to them (not you!), don’t rush into the call, do a little deep breathing and project positive outcomes (this can take seconds-not hours…you’ve got the time.) Make solid eye-contact and LISTEN! What this does, is improve your manner of speaking so that you are fully engaging, which is all that matters. Use your voice, your best voice, which helps to redirect the outcome to your favor.
These techniques are lethal, as a matter of fact. So when you’re utilizing the game day physicality, when you’re using the million dollar mindset, when you are incorporating that sense of connection, What I call tech talk. The ability to use the technology to work in your favor… It’s you at your best. These are my pillars to communications success-optimizing your communications by being fully authentic. You’ll also optimize your results when you use these techniques.
More importantly, we get you heard, and we get you fully understood. After all, isn’t that what you really desire?
